BIS Certification for Miscellaneous Steel Products

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) has notified a Quality Control Order after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards to make BIS certification mandatory for Miscellaneous Steel Products.

Now miscellaneous steel products are mandatory for BIS certification after the implementation date of the Quality Control Order.

Quality Control Order for Miscellaneous Steel Products

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry published this notification on 25th September, 2023 in the official gazette through the Bureau of Indian Standards.
The purpose of this Quality Control Order is to make BIS certification mandatory for miscellaneous steel products considering the quality and safety of these products.

(1) This order may be called the Miscellaneous Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023.
(2) It shall come into force on the expiry of six months from the date of publication of this notification in the Official Gazette.

Small Enterprises- 25th June, 2024

Process for BIS Certification for Miscellaneous Steel Products

The BIS certification process is different for both domestic manufacturers and foreign manufacturers.
Obtaining BIS Certification for Miscellaneous Steel Products involves a systematic process. Manufacturers or importers of these products need to follow these steps to obtaining BIS certification.

  1. Standard Identification:Identification of standards for the product being certified.
  1. Documents Preparation:Collect all the necessary documents and ensure the product to be certified meets the required standards.
    1. Application Submission:Submission of application to the BIS website portal.
    2. Scrutiny of Documents: Submitted documents scrutiny by BIS officials.
    3. Sample Testing:Send product samples to a BIS recognized lab for testing.
    4. Audit: Audit by BIS officer on manufacturing premises.
    5. Grant of License:BIS license will be granted after successful audit.

Compulsory Use of Standard Mark

After grant of license to the manufacturers they have to show ISI mark on their products with CML number of the license. The ISI mark shows that the product is tested and certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards. ISI mark helps the customers to recognise the certified products and to make the purchasing decision in the market.
If any person who contravenes the provisions of this order shall be punishable in accordance with the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
