BIS certification is mandatory for various electrical accessories in India. Quality Control Order for Electrical Accessories
The Quality Control Order (QCO) issued by the MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) to make BIS certification mandatory for certain electrical accessories. The ministry published this QCO after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards on 1st January, 2024 in the official gazette.
(1) This order may be called the Electrical Accessories (Quality Control) Order, 2023.
(2) It shall come into force on the expiry of 6 months from the date of publication of this notification in the Official Gazette.
Date of Implementation of QCO for Electrical Accessories
- For large or foreign manufacturers, it shall come into force on the expiry of 6 months from the date of publication of this notification.
- For small manufacturers, it shall come into force on the expiry of 9 months from the date of publication of this notification.
- For micro enterprises, it shall come into force on the expiry of 12 months from the date of publication of this notification.

Compulsory Use of Standard Mark
BIS certification is commonly known as the ISI mark certification, and is mandatory for certain electrical accessories that fall under BIS certification as per the guidelines of Bureau of Indian Standards. The ISI mark on any product indicates that the product has been tested and approved by the Bureau of Indian Standards. Manufacturers are required to display the ISI mark on their products which are under mandatory BIS certification. As per the Quality Control Order for Electrical accessories, if any person who contravenes the provisions of this order shall be punishable under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
