BIS Certification for Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances

MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY (Department for Promotion of Industry And Internal Trade) after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards notified a Quality Control Order to make BIS certification mandatory for Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances.

By considering the quality and safety of these products, the ministry has taken this step with the Bureau of Indian Standards.

IS 302 (Part 1): 2008 – Quality Control Order for Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances

The Quality Control Order for Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances was notified on 17th September 2024 by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Department For Promotion Of Industry And Internal Trade) in the official gazette. Total 85 Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances are covered in this Quality Control Order.

(1) This Order may be called the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2024.

(2) This order shall apply to all electrical appliances intended for household, commercial or similar applications with rated voltage not exceeding 250V single phase alternating current or 415V three phase alternating current and which do not fall under the scope of any other Quality Control Order issued under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act.

Date of Implementation of QCO for Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances

  • Date of Implementation in General (other than Micro and Small Enterprises) – 6 months from the date of publication of the QCO in E-Gazette.
  • Date of Implementation for Small Enterprises – 9 months from the date of publication of the QCO in E-Gazette.
  • Date of Implementation for Micro Enterprises – 12 months from the date of publication of the QCO in E-Gazette.

BIS Certification Process for Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances

Obtaining BIS certification for Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances involves a detailed and systematic process.

  1. Standard identification: Determining the specific standards applicable to the product being certified.
  2. Documents Preparation: Gather all essential documents, both technical and general, ensuring that the product complies with the necessary standards.
  3. Application Submission: Submission of application to the BIS website portal.

Compulsory Use of Standard Mark

When BIS certification is granted to the manufacturers, it is compulsory to use ISI mark on the products as per their specified standards. The ISI mark is the mark on a product which shows that the product is tested and certified.
If any person who contravenes the provisions of this Order shall be punishable under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
