The Central Government Ministry of commerce and industry (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade), after  consulting The Bureau of Indian Standards (Govt. of India), has made BIS certification for Furniture is mandatory as per specified Indian Standard. BIS Certification  ensures national standards, for both consumers and manufacturers. BIS certification for furniture guarantees that the products meet the required Indian standards, ensuring durability, strength and safety for consumers. The certification is mandatory for certain furniture products under the Quality Control Order (QCO) issued by the government.

BIS Quality Control Order for Furniture

Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) has issued Quality Control Orders (QCO) on the date 13th February, 2025 after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards to regulate the quality of  Furniture for their production, import and sale.

The Quality Control Order (QCO) for furniture is a regulatory measure introduced by the Government of India to ensure that only quality-certified furniture is available in the market. The QCO mandates that specific furniture products meet BIS standards before they are sold. This order helps in preventing substandard and unsafe furniture from entering the market, thereby protecting consumers and promoting quality manufacturing practices.

These orders mandate that specific products comply with Indian Standards and obtain the BIS certification.

(1)This order may be called the Furniture (Quality Control)Order, 2025.

(2)It shall come into force on the expiry of 12 months from the date of publication of this notification.

Penalty for Contravention: If any person who contravenes the provisions of this QCO  shall be punishable under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016.

Process to obtain BIS Certification for Furniture
