BIS Certification for Cylinder

BIS Certification for Cylinder, Valves and Regulator

BIS Certification for Gas cylinders, valves and regulators is mandatory due to their critical role in safety across industries such as automotive, medical, industrial and domestic gas usage. BIS  ensures that these products meet stringent safety, performance and quality requirements before they are manufactured, sold or imported.

BIS Certification is mandatory for gas cylinders, valves and regulators as they fall under high-risk safety products. The certification confirms that the product complies with the relevant Indian Standard (IS) specifications.

Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license before manufacturing and selling these products in the Indian market. Importers must also ensure that imported products are BIS-certified before clearance.

Quality Control Order (QCO) for Cylinder, Valves and Regulator

The Government of India has notified Quality Control Orders (QCOs) for cylinders, valves, and regulators to make BIS certification mandatory.
As per Quality Control Order:

  • Non-certified products cannot be manufactured, sold, or imported
  • Products must carry the ISI Mark
  • Non-compliance may lead to penalties, product seizure, or business restrictions

Products Covered under BIS Certification

Cylinders:

  • IS 14899 – Liquefied petroleum gas containers for automotive use
  • IS 3196 (Part 4) – Welded low carbon steel cylinders exceeding 5 litre water capacity for low pressure liquefiable gases (toxic and corrosive gases)
  • IS 3196 (Part 1) – Welded low carbon steel gas cylinders exceeding 5 litre water capacity for low pressure liquefiable gases (LPG)
  • IS 3196 (Part 2) – Welded low carbon steel gas cylinders exceeding 5 litre water capacity for low pressure liquefiable gases other than LPG
  • IS 7142 – Welded low carbon steel cylinders for low pressure liquefiable gases not exceeding 5 litre water capacity
  • IS 7285 (Part 1) – Refillable seamless steel gas cylinders – Normalized steel cylinders
  • IS 7285 (Part 2) – Refillable seamless steel gas cylinders – Quenched and tempered steel cylinders (tensile strength < 1100 MPa)
  • IS 7312 – Welded and seamless steel dissolved acetylene gas cylinders

Valves and Valve Fittings:

  • IS 15100 – Multifunction valve assembly for permanently fixed LPG containers for automotive use
  • IS 3224 – Valve fittings for compressed gas cylinders (excluding LPG cylinders)
  • IS 3745 – Yoke type valve connection for small medical gas cylinders
  • IS 7302 – Valve fittings for gas cylinder valves for use with breathing apparatus
  • IS 8737 – Valve fittings for LPG cylinders of more than 5 litre water capacity (newly manufactured LPG cylinders)
  • IS 8776 – Valve fittings for LPG cylinders up to and including 5 litre water capacity

Regulators:

  • IS 9798 – Low pressure regulators for use with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) mixtures

Conclusion

As the BIS Certification for Cylinder, Valves and Regulator is mandatory under the guidelines of Bureau of Indian Standards, manufacturers and importers must ensure strict compliance with the applicable Indian Standards to avoid legal issues and ensure market access.

For businesses operating in this sector, timely BIS registration and continuous compliance are essential for sustainable operations and long-term success.
