The Government of India is introducing mandatory quality compliance requirements for several wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy products used for general engineering purposes.
Manufacturers who manufacture products covered under IS 733:1983, IS 734:1975, IS 736:1986, IS 737:2008, IS 739:1992 and IS 740:1977 should review the applicable BIS requirements and prepare for compliance.
The implementation date for these requirements is 01 December 2026.
For manufacturers, this means it is important to identify the applicable Indian Standard, understand the certification requirements and initiate the BIS licensing process well before the deadline.
Aluminium Products Covered
The following six product categories are covered:
| Product | Indian Standard | Implementation Date |
| Wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy bars, rods and sections for General Engineering Purposes | IS 733:1983 | 01 December 2026 |
| Wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys, forging stock and forgings for general engineering purposes | IS 734:1975 | 01 December 2026 |
| Wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy plate for general engineering purposes | IS 736:1986 | 01 December 2026 |
| Wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy sheet and strip for general engineering purposes | IS 737:2008 | 01 December 2026 |
| Wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy wire for general engineering purposes | IS 739:1992 | 01 December 2026 |
| Wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy rivet stock for general engineering purposes | IS 740:1977 | 01 December 2026 |
1. IS 733:1983 – Aluminium Bars, Rods and Sections
IS 733:1983 covers wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy bars, rods and sections for general engineering purposes.
Manufacturers producing aluminium or aluminium alloy bars, rods or sections covered within the applicable scope should assess their BIS certification requirements before the implementation date.
2. IS 734:1975 – Forging Stock and Forgings
IS 734:1975 covers wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys, forging stock and forgings for general engineering purposes.
Manufacturers supplying forging stock or forgings should determine whether their products fall under the applicable scope of the standard and prepare for BIS compliance.
3. IS 736:1986 – Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Plates
IS 736:1986 covers wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy plates for general engineering purposes.
For products covered by the applicable requirements, manufacturers should ensure that their manufacturing and testing systems are capable of demonstrating conformity with the relevant Indian Standard.
4. IS 737:2008 – Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Sheet and Strip
IS 737:2008 covers wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy sheet and strip for general engineering purposes.
Manufacturers should review their existing product specifications and quality-control systems to determine whether their products are covered by the applicable BIS requirements.
5. IS 739:1992 – Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Wire
IS 739:1992 covers wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy wire for general engineering purposes.
Manufacturers of covered products should review the applicable requirements and prepare their production, testing and documentation systems for BIS certification.
6. IS 740:1977 – Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Rivet Stock
IS 740:1977 covers wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy rivet stock for general engineering purposes.
Manufacturers dealing with covered rivet stock should evaluate their product range against the applicable requirements and prepare for BIS certification.
Date of Implementation
The implementation date is:
01 December 2026
Waiting until the last moment can create unnecessary challenges, particularly if testing, documentation, factory assessment or BIS queries require additional time.
Manufacturers should evaluate their product portfolio against IS 733:1983, IS 734:1975, IS 736:1986, IS 737:2008, IS 739:1992 and IS 740:1977 to determine the applicable compliance requirements.
