BIS Certification for Steel

The Central Government Ministry of Steel has made BIS Certification for Steel and Steel Products mandatory, after consulting The Bureau of Indian Standards. The Bureau of Indian Standards certification is essential for ensuring the quality, safety and reliability of steel and steel products. BIS certification is mandatory for various steel products, including steel bars, sheets, rods and structural steel as per  the recent Quality Control Orders (QCO) issued by the government.

The ISI mark, is a mark or symbol that signifies that a steel product conforms to the relevant Indian Standards. Manufacturers must obtain an ISI mark license from BIS before selling their products in the Indian market.

Quality Control Order for Steel and Steel Products

Ministry of Steel has issued Quality Control Orders (QCO) on the date 29th August, 2024 after consulting with the Bureau of Indian Standards to regulate the quality of various Steel and Steel Products for their production, import and sale in the Indian market.

  • This Order may be called the BIS Certificate for Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024.
  • Save as otherwise provided in this Order, it shall come into force on the date of its publication (with immediate effect) in the Official Gazette.

Penalty for Contravention:

Any person who contravenes any of the provisions of this QCO shall be punishable under section 29 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016).
